Not Quite What I Had Planned

The ideal man bears the accidents of life with dignity and grace, making the best of circumstances.

So, the original plan was for a dress rehearsal before my trip, you can see the out and back route I’d planned below. I’d even booked a space at a campsite. Due to um, a recent incident, that trip didn’t happen today. I did, however, have a lie in. Or rather, I would have, if the cat had let me.

This WAS the plan.

So, instead I adjusted the brakes on the bike. First time I’ve done this on disk brakes, but as they’re mechanical it was pretty straightforward. Compared to caliper brakes I think they’re easier to balance. They now feel much livelier and more responsive, although they still need road testing.

I thought I’d try and get something useful out of the weekend, so I waited until it had started raining, and then attempted to go from packed up bike to setup tent – but in the garden.

With a little bit of ingenuity, I found a way to get most of the bike inside one of the two tent porches. This I’m really pleased about. It feels much more secure, makes it easy to unpack from the bike even in the rain, and it keeps the handlebars and (most importantly) the saddle dry.

I also made a mid-afternoon snack on the gas stove and ate it from the relative comfort of the tent. I’m glad I decided to get the new tent, as the other one I have is very small indeed and would have been way to cramped to manage in wet conditions. There is, I think, a fairly good chance I’m going to have some wet conditions on the trip.

After that, I went inside, and had a cup of tea.

I think I might go and try sleeping out there tonight, or at least check out the conditions. It’s much cooler tonight, with a bit of wind, so it would be good to see how warm I’d be. I’ll update on that experiment tomorrow.

My leg is a lot less painful today, but I’m still limping around the house. The pins and needles have stopped now also. Dr Google indicates 48 hours of rest. I shall obey, mostly.
