What to eat

So I am going to try and feed myself on this trip. I think this is going to come down to freeze dried / dehydrated food. Water, I am confident I will be able to find along the way (more on that on another post).

There is the option of eating “out” every night, but that’s problematic because A: I need to keep an eye on the bike, and B: it could get expensive. So I’ll use that option as backup, or for a morale booster.

I’ve looked at various “expedition” rations, and they look like a good option because they’re quite varied, provide a lot of calories, and pack small and light. However I thought I’d see what I could find in the supermarket.

So, breakfast is easy. It’s either a box load of Oatsosimple with golden syrup, or just a bag of oats. I can add some dried fruit, sugar and salt. I think I’ll go for a bag of oats, less packaging. Also, I’m figuring on roadside cafe full English breakfasts maybe every other day 😀

Dinner, then, from trawling the supermarket, could be all manner of plastic packed food… But I really want to avoid waste and plastic… The best two I could find, were these two…

First off, Kabuto Noodles, various flavours, very Californian marketing. Very lightweight, but a bit bulky. Contents tasted good, but could probably be a bit more substantial. More an office lunch than a dinner. I’ll probably be snacking later.

I liked that it was pull off foil on cardboard. No plastic that I could see.

Second potential option was Prep Co. This claims Natural Ingredients, similar packaging style, I haven’t tried it yet. It’s just a bit bulky.

So, in summary, supermarket options appear a little bulky, and probably not substantial enough. I’ll keep looking though, and I’ll take some of these with me on the trial run this weekend.

Here is a picture of them both, plus remote control for scale (it was handy).

And because it was so lovely, here is the sunset from this evening…
